Bearded Dragon

Bearded dragons originate from the tropical savannas and deserts in Australia. They are found on tree stumps and boulders basking in the sun. Hatchlings are about 3 inches long weighing 4-6 grams. Adults are about 19-24 inches long weighing between 400 and 550 grams. They can live till about 14 years old.

Care:

Hatchlings under ten inches can live in a 10 gallon, but prefer more space, so a 20 gallon tank is more adequate

Juveniles 10 to 16 inches long require a 40 gallon tank.

Adults over 16 inches require a 50 to 75 gallon tank.

They require both high ultraviolet (UVA and UVB) output light bulbs.

The hot side needs to be 104-107 degrees fahrenheit with a cool side of 71-77 degrees fahrenheit.

They need a low humidity of 30-40 percent.

Their diet consists of live worms, mealworms, and crickets as protein. They can also eat collard greens and vegetables, with a limited amount of fruit.

Handling:

When handling a bearded dragon, place a hand below their belly and support all four limbs.

When a bearded dragon is stressed or threatened, they will puff their darkened throat out, creating the “bearded” look.

Handle in little increments when starting out to get the dragon used to being handled. They don’t love it or prefer it, they merely “tolerate it”.
